Hugh Brady and his Scotch wife, Hannah McCormick emigrated from County Derry, Ireland around 1732 to Cape Henlopen, DE and settled on the forks of the Delaware where there was a Scotch Irish settlement. Their first son, John, was born there. Then they moved to PA in 1734, they settled in Cumberland Valley on the Conodoquinet Creek. They latter settled in Hopewell Twp. in 1738. Both Hugh and Hannah are buried in the Middle Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery where Hugh was listed as a pew holder in 1754.
The Brady name is said to have been of early Irish origin and derived from the residence of its first bearers as "the broad hey or enclosure" in which they lived. It is found in ancient records in the various forms of Bradhey, Bradhee, Bradee, Brayde, Bradey, Bradeye, McBrady, O'Brady, and Brady, of which the last is the most generally accepted form today.

Our Angel is now with her Hannah!
Sadly, Donna Cuillard passed away November 16, 2026 due to complications from cancer, which she battled for 3 years. She will be terribly missed by the Brady Family Association and all who had the honor of knowing her. She contributed so much to the organization, from organizing reunions to publishing newsletters with updates of current Brady descendants as well as historical write ups on many of our notable ancestors. She was a very talented genealogist.
She contributed so much to Townsend Brady’s book on the Brady family homestead, Cabin on the Creek. Yet in her own self-effacing way she wanted no credit as a co-author. Town finally persuaded her to agree to the by-line on the cover: Research by Donna Cuillard. She was very proud of that book, and the fact that for years after its publication, no one came forward to contest any of our findings.
Before Donna died, she and Town were discussing writing a second book documenting the history of Hugh Brady and some of his more notable descendants. Town was insisting she be listed as a co-author on this second book.
Donna’s passing is a huge loss for the Brady family.
